An Irish reel composed by Lawrence (Larry) Grogan of Johnstown Castle, County Wexford, Ireland, around 1725. Grogan was renowned as a ‘gentleman piper’ and composer of Irish airs. Originally titled ‘Ally Croaker,’ the song had words put to it in England and appeared in Colley Cibber’s play ‘Love in a Riddle’ (1729). The tune traveled internationally and morphed into a reel version in North America, where it’s known as ‘Reel des Bouchons’ in Quebec.
