A traditional American old-time fiddle tune with multiple documented versions from different regions. The Stripling Brothers recorded it in 1929 as “Le Reel Du Charretier” (Carter’s Reel), while Mississippi fiddler John Alexander Brown recorded it for the Library of Congress in 1939 as part of a WPA field recording project. W.E. Claunch also recorded “Wolves Howlin” during Herbert Halpert’s Mississippi field recording trips. A Missouri Ozarks version was preserved by fiddlers Gene Goforth, Bob Holt, and Earl Collins. The tune appears in the compilation “Great Big Yam Potatoes” and has been documented by Harry Bolick and Stephen Austin. It appears in the Milliner-Koken collection under three spelling variants: “Wolves a-howlin’,” “Wolves a-howling,” and “Wolves howling.” The tune is known for working well in AEAE tuning with opportunities for open string droning.
