The “Assiniboine Polka” is a lively, three-part polka composed by the prominent Métis fiddler Andy De Jarlis (1914–1975). Named after the Assiniboine River region of Manitoba, where he was born and where the Red and Assiniboine Rivers meet, the tune is featured in his book Canadian Fiddle Tunes from the Red River Valley (Book 1), published in 1958. This collection of tunes is a cornerstone of the Métis fiddling tradition, which blends Scottish, Irish, and French Canadian influences. According to fiddler Patti Kusturok, the polka’s three parts are played in different keys: the A part is in D, the B part is in A, and the C part is in G, often following an ABACA form. De Jarlis was a prolific composer with over 200 tunes to his credit, many of which were named after places and people from his life.
