A traditional reel in E Dorian, also known as “Smuggler’s Reel,” with origins that point to Irish tradition. The tune appeared in Scottish collections in the 1880s where it was listed as an Irish tune. The earliest sound recording was made by Scottish melodeon player Frederick James Cameron in January 1910. The tune became popular at North American contra dances. It is almost identical to the Scottish 6/8 jig “Hills of Glenorchy,” except for its distinctive rising cadence in the final measures. The first part of the tune is similar to “Wabash Jig” and “Night We Made the Match,” and shares characteristics with an untitled reel collected in Pennsylvania and documented by Samuel Bayard in “Dance to the Fiddle” (1981), No. 140, p. 76.
Key: E Dorian
