Composed by Irish fiddler Martin “Junior” Crehan (1908-1998) of County Clare, this haunting jig in A Dorian was inspired by Mount Callan, which can be seen from his home in West Clare, Ireland. Crehan described his playing style as “sweet” and “emotive,” relying on rhythmic variation and double-stops influenced by his friendships with uilleann pipers Willie Clancy and Johnny Doran. In Clare they say about the mountain that “if you can see the mountain, then it’s going to rain; if you can’t see the mountain, it’s raining.” The tune’s Dorian mode and misty imagery evoke the atmosphere of the Irish countryside. It has been recorded by Matt Molloy, Dervish, Kevin Burke, Kevin Crawford, and numerous others.
