The tune “Moses First Change” is a Canadian fiddle tune composed by Métis fiddler John Arcand. It is a variation of his earlier tune, “Moses,” and was written in honor of Moise White, a prominent square dance caller from Alberta. The tune is featured on Arcand’s 1994 album, Echoes of the Prairie, performed by John Arcand and the Sons of the Early Settlers. The melody is characterized by its flowing, intricate phrasing, which sets it apart from a typical reel. One of Arcand’s many compositions, which have earned him the title “Master of the Métis Fiddle”. I learned this tune from Calvin Vollrath at a Fiddle Hell Online workshop.
