Clinch Mountain Backstep is a signature bluegrass banjo tune composed by Ralph Stanley, first recorded by the Stanley Brothers and the Clinch Mountain Boys on September 30, 1958, for King Records. Named after the 150-mile Appalachian mountain range straddling Tennessee and Virginia, the tune features Stanley’s distinctive playing style—rooted in his clawhammer background and infused with bluesy modal qualities drawn from the Dorian scale. The defining characteristic is the “backstep”—an extra half measure (2/4) inserted into the second strain of the otherwise 4/4 tune. While the A part’s melody closely resembles the older traditional tune “Sandy Boys” (attributed to West Virginia fiddler Edden Hammons), Stanley’s composition transformed it into a bluegrass standard. Typically played in A or G Major with AABB structure.
