Stone’s Rag was composed by Oscar Stone, fiddler for Dr. Humphrey Bates’ Possum Hunters, a prominent Nashville string band of the 1920s-30s that performed on the Grand Ole Opry. Ironically, Stone himself never recorded his own composition. The tune was first recorded in 1928 by his friend Charlie Arrington of Paul Warmack’s Gully Jumpers, another Opry band. Bob Wills later recorded a variant as “Lone Star Rag” in 1940, helping spread the tune across Texas. Notable fiddle recordings include Chubby Wise’s 1969 version on “Chubby Wise and His Fiddle”, Byron Berline’s interpretation on “Dad’s Favorites,” and the New Lost City Ramblers’ 1964 recording.
