A minor-key Dorian reel that appears in Knauff’s 1839 Virginia Reels as “The 22nd of February.” The tune later became known as “Miller’s Reel” and “28th of January” in twentieth-century Southern fiddling traditions. This variant features standard AABB form in regular tuning and showcases the distinctive sound of the Dorian mode – minor but with a brighter quality than natural minor due to the raised sixth degree. Franklin George’s 2008 recording captures the West Virginia interpretation of this melody.
