Across the Plains

A traditional Old Time breakdown in G major, documented from western Kentucky fiddler W.L. “Jake” Phelps (1885–1977) of Elkton, Todd County. The primary record is Bruce Greene’s 1973 field recording of Phelps, transcribed and published in Jeff Todd Titon’s Old-Time Kentucky Fiddle Tunes (University Press of Kentucky, 2001); Greene also recorded a solo version on Five Miles of Ellum Wood (Marimac, 1998), the main vehicle through which the tune has circulated.
