An Irish tune commemorating the Battle of Aughrim (July 12, 1691), the decisive defeat of the Jacobite forces in the Williamite War in Ireland. Despite its subject, the melody itself likely dates from the second half of the eighteenth century. It is played as a slow march or lament, and became widely known as “After the Battle of Aughrim” through the Chieftains; it also circulates simply as “The Battle of Aughrim.”
