Augustin Waltz

D major

Augustin Waltz is the American fiddle-book name for “O du lieber Augustin,” a Viennese song documented from around 1800 and tied by legend to the balladeer Marx Augustin, said to have survived Vienna’s 1679 plague. The simple major-key waltz is carried into English-language tradition as the tune of the children’s songs “Did You Ever See a Lassie?” and “The More We Get Together,” and taken up as a theme for variation sets by classical composers including Johann Nepomuk Hummel.
