Blue River Waltz

A minorWaltzContemporary

Contemporary waltz in A minor, composed by Jay Ungar (with Molly Mason), copyrighted in 2002, but performed in old-time and bluegrass circles. It gained broad recognition well beyond its original audience after being used as theme music for Ken Burns’ PBS documentary series The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. In Jay and Molly’s music book, Catskill Mountain Waltzes and Airs, the note mentions that the waltz is “inspired by a flat-water canoe trip on the Big Blue River in Kansas.”
