I’ll Learn You How to Rock Andy

A traditional Old Time breakdown in A mixolydian, played in standard tuning, documented from Pike County fiddler Owen “Snake” Chapman (1919–2002) of Canada, Kentucky, who learned it from his father G.W. Chapman. Jeff Titon’s Old-Time Kentucky Fiddle Tunes places it in the “Paddy on the Turnpike” family, related melodically to “Ducks on the Pond” and the high part of “June Apple.” The title is a corruption of “Rock Candy,” the name of a now-forgotten dance form per Mark Wilson of Rounder Records, though Chapman offered a different origin story. Chapman’s recording appears on Up in Chapman’s Hollow (Rounder 0378, 1996).
