Tune

I’ve Got a Grandpa

Breakdown

A traditional Old Time breakdown in A dorian resolving to G major, documented from Alva Greene (1894–1976) of Sandy Hook, Elliott County, northeastern Kentucky, recorded in 1973. Jeff Titon’s Old-Time Kentucky Fiddle Tunes identifies it as a variant of “Barlow Knife (1)”; the A part is modal in character while the B part settles into G major throughout, giving the tune a double-tonic quality. Greene’s recording was released on Traditional Fiddle Music of Kentucky, vol. 1 (Rounder 0376, 1997).
