Lauterbach Waltz is the fiddle-book title for the German folk song “Zu Lauterbach hab’ ich mein’ Strumpf verlor’n” (“At Lauterbach I lost my stocking”), a Tyrolean tune documented from 1827. American ears know the melody through Septimus Winner’s 1864 adaptation “Der Deitcher’s Dog,” far better remembered by its refrain “Oh where, oh where has my little dog gone?” Set in Old Time Fiddlers’ Barn Dance Tunes as a waltz, one of several dance forms the well-traveled tune has taken.
