Maggie Gray

A traditional Old Time breakdown in three keys — E minor (A part), A mixolydian (B part), and G major (C part) — played in standard or GCgd tuning, documented from George Lee Hawkins (1904–1991) of Bath County, northeastern Kentucky, who fashioned the tune from a banjo piece he heard as a boy. Hawkins’s recording appears on Traditional Fiddle Music of Kentucky, vol. 1 (Rounder 0376, 1997); Roger Cooper recorded it on Going Back to Old Kentucky (Rounder 0380, 1997).
