The Old Grey Mare

A nursery song collected in the southern Appalachians by Olive Dame Campbell and Cecil Sharp and printed as no. 122 in English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians (G. P. Putnam’s Sons, 1917), p. 321, where it closes the Nursery Songs section. The song was carried forward into the enlarged two-volume Oxford University Press edition of 1932 edited by Maud Karpeles.

Note: Shares a title with the fiddle tune printed in Ford’s Traditional Music in America (1940), which is the popular song “The Old Gray Mare (She Ain’t What She Used to Be),” Roud 751, and carries a different text.
