Pretty Little Dog is an old-time reel in A minor composed by West Virginia fiddler Lee Triplett. It’s played in either standard or AEae tuning. Triplett said he came up with it, along with its companion “Pretty Little Cat,” because he couldn’t get the hang of Doc White’s “Pretty Little Shoes.” Printed versions differ in structure: Brody’s Fiddler’s Fakebook sets it in four parts, while others have a two-part AABB version. The Fuzzy Mountain String Band recorded it on their 1972 self-titled album (Rounder 0010), and the Critton Hollow Stringband included it on Poor Boy (1979).
Lee Triplett (1897–1981) was from Clay, West Virginia. Berea College holds a 1973 recording of him playing this tune and others at the Mountain Heritage Festival. It’s accessible via the Digital Library of Appalachia .
