A major · D major · G majorBreakdown · SongOld TimeADae
Traditional Old Time breakdown from the southern Appalachians, played in D major with the fiddle cross-tuned ADae in the Round Peak setting and in G major in the Kentucky version Doc Roberts recorded. It sits in the same tune family as “Sail Away Ladies” and “Great Big Taters in Sandy Land.” J.P. Fraley plays a version in A major. Jeff Todd Titon identifies the B part as related to the low part of the “Pateroller Song”/”Run Johnny Run” group. The Round Peak setting runs to three parts (AABBCC), and floating sung verses attach to the tune. Frank Blevins and His Tar Heel Rattlers cut a version at Columbia’s 1927 Atlanta session, the Fiddlin’ Doc Roberts Trio’s recording appeared on Conqueror 7766 in 1931, and Flatt and Scruggs recorded it for Foggy Mountain Banjo (Columbia, 1961).
