Smoky Hornpipe

A traditional Old Time hornpipe in D major, documented from Clyde Davenport (b. 1921) of Monticello, Wayne County, Kentucky, recorded by Jeff Todd Titon in 1990. Jeff Titon’s Old-Time Kentucky Fiddle Tunes notes the high part is related to “Texas Quickstep (1)”/“Rachel,” and Davenport himself remarked it was one of the few hornpipes in his repertoire alongside Fisher’s and Marmaduke’s. Davenport’s recording appears on Puncheon Camps (Berea College Appalachian Center AC002, 1992).
