A traditional Old Time breakdown in G major, documented from James W. Day (1861–1942, also known as Blind Bill Day and Jilson Setters) of Rowan County and Ashland, Kentucky, recorded for the Library of Congress by John A. Lomax in June 1937 (LC AFS 1019 A2). Day was promoted by folklorist Jean Thomas under the fictional persona of “Jilson Setters,” though TTA notes his repertoire actually mixed older tunes with compositions of his own; “Sweet Susan” was in the repertoire of several east Kentucky fiddlers and was not a commercial recording-era tune. Roger Cooper recorded it on Going Back to Old Kentucky (Rounder 0380, 1997).
