Thomas Moore’s moonlit invitation to steal a few hours from the night, published in volume 5 of his Irish Melodies (1813) and set, per the Melodies headnote, to the air “The Dandy O!”. Its lilting tune kept it in the light end of the Moore repertoire, a favorite of glee singers and parlor duets through the nineteenth century.
