Historical Collection
White’s 100 Popular Hornpipes, Reels, Jigs and Country Dances for the Violin (1880) is a collection published by Jean White of Boston, one of the leading American band and orchestra music publishers of the period. The 100 tunes are notated for violin or flute and organized into five sections — hornpipes (50 tunes), strathspeys (20), reels (10), jigs (10), and country dances (10) — with no composer attributions. The repertoire is predominantly British Isles in character, drawing heavily on English hornpipes and Scottish dance music, with a smaller Irish jig contingent; the ten-tune reel section consists almost entirely of named Scottish reels. The collection functions as a practical dance musician’s reference rather than an instructional method, with no fingering, bowings.
Jean White founded the publishing firm in Boston in 1867, specializing in band and orchestra music. He died in 1884, after which his widow managed the firm at least through 1894. Since the copyright is 1880, this was published during his lifetime.
Note: There is a separate collection, “White’s unique collection : jigs, reels, etc. for violin with piano accompaniment” published by White-Smith Music Pub. Co. in 1896. See contents on the Irish Traditional Music Archive. There is some overlap in the collections.Samuel Bayard, in his 1944 Hill Country Tunes, references White’s Unique Collection for several tunes.
