J. P. Fraley was a renowned fiddler from eastern Kentucky who learned to play from his father and other local fiddlers, including the legendary blind fiddler Ed Haley. Known for his unique tone and soulful style on waltzes and two-steps, he was also a coal mining equipment salesman whose work took him around the world, exposing him to different musical cultures.
