Headwaters of Tygart

A traditional Old Time breakdown in G major, named for Tygart’s Creek in Carter and Greenup Counties, northeastern Kentucky — a waterway named after early explorer Michael Tygart and still locally known as “the Tiger.” The Titon version is sourced from Roger Cooper of Lewis County, who learned it from Joe Stamper and Abe Keibler; Cooper’s recording appears on Snakewinder (Berea College Appalachian Center AC007, 1993). John Hartford noted that the Keibler Brothers, well-known fiddlers around Portsmouth, Ohio, played a version that may be related to Ed Haley’s “No Corn on Tygart.”
