Ladies in the Ballroom

A traditional Old Time breakdown in G major, documented primarily from Clyde Davenport of Monticello, Wayne County, Kentucky, and identified as a regional variant of “Waynesboro,” which traces to the Irish reel “Over the Moor to Maggie (2).” Jeff Titon’s Old-Time Kentucky Fiddle Tunes notes that Bob Fulcher traced the tune’s local history to Shell Coffey (b. 1895), who learned it from an older African-American fiddler, Bled Coffey, who came to Wayne County from Virginia before the Civil War. Davenport’s version appears in Phillips (1994) and on Clydeoscope (County 786, 1986).
