“Old Yeller Dog Come Trotting Through the Meeting House” is a peppy, AABB-structured old-time fiddle tune typically played in the key of G major. Its origins date to the 19th-century minstrel song tradition, first appearing in print in 1858 as “Down in Alabam’”. The tune’s humorous title is a nod to the once-common practice of dogs accompanying their owners to church services in the American South . A testament to its cultural reach, the melody even served as a campaign song for Abraham Lincoln.
