Buck Hord

Buck Hord is a traditional Old Time reel in A major from eastern Kentucky, played in AEae cross tuning and associated with fiddler Alva Greene of Sandy Hook, Elliott County. Greene was recorded in the field by Guthrie Meade and Mark Wilson in the mid-1970s, and Jeff Titon has noted a melodic relationship to the widely played “Rye Straw,” while John Harrod and Mark Wilson have suggested the odd title may stem from a mishearing — variant spellings include “Buck Herd” and “Buck Hoard.” Greene’s field recording was issued on Rounder’s Traditional Fiddle Music of Kentucky, Vol. 1: Up the Ohio and Licking Rivers (1997); J.P. and Annadeene Fraley recorded it as “Buck Herd” on Maysville (Rounder, 1995), and Bruce Molsky included it on Lost Boy (Rounder, 1996).
