Capt. Francis O'Neill · Lyon & Healy, Chicago · 1907
Historical Collection
Published in Chicago in 1907, The Dance Music of Ireland: 1001 Gems is Capt. Francis O’Neill’s follow-up to his larger Music of Ireland (1903), which mixed songs, airs, and dance tunes. For this volume O’Neill kept only the dance music — double jigs, slip jigs, reels, hornpipes, and set dances — re-edited and transcribed by fiddler Sgt. James O’Neill, largely from the playing of Irish immigrant musicians in Chicago. “O’Neill’s 1001” became the most influential collection of Irish dance music ever assembled, and tunes are still commonly cited by their number in this book.
